1960 Nancy Bowen, McGillHOMETOWN: McGill    BIRTHDAY: October 28, 1940

EDUCATION: Music & Drama student at Brigham Young University
TALENT: Humorous dramatic reading while accompanying on Piano – “Recollections”
  • She won talent award at Miss Nevada Pageant with a comedic reading portraying an OLD woman, a portrayal which no one else has ever done at the Miss America Pageant.(first time awarded at state pageant)
  • Listed as the first entry to 1960 pageant. She was chosen from entrants who were employees or daughters of employees of Kennecot Copper Co., sponsor (her father worked there)
  • Had to transfer from BYU to University of Nevada in Reno because the contest rules required that the winner of Miss Nevada must reside in the state for at least one year
  • Went to California and received a hair & makeup consultation from Perc Westmore, famous Hollywood hair stylist and makeup artist
  • Former Miss Nevada’s helped prepare her for Miss America
  • Toured Washington DC & visited with Nevada senators and representative before heading to Atlantic City
  • Interviewed presidential candidate nominee, John F. Kennedy
  • Selected as one of 130 students to attend the International Graduate School at Oxford University Summer Session in 1967
  • Worked two terms as secretary to the director of biological labs at Harvard after graduating from BYU.
  • Worked at 20th Century Fox Studios as secretary to various directors and producers while attending UCLA
  • Received government grant to do doctoral work at New York University in theatre and deafness
  • Compiled and adapted recipes from Elizabethan England for a cookbook sold at first   Renaissance Faire on campus of Kansas Newman College, an event directed by her husband,  Dr. Andrew Tadie

  • Married name: Nancy Tadie (Husband – Dr. Andrew)
  • Received her Master’s degree from UCLA in Theater Arts
  • Received a PhD from NYU in 1979, after completing an 800 page dissertation on the history of the uses of drama by deaf students at Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C.
  • Spend 12 years teaching hearing and hearing-impaired students before suffering complications from a spinal cord injury that affected her right hand and foot.
  • Used left hand in last 25 years to compile two family cookbooks, write a collection of verses on relatives, write several children’s stories and,biographies and family histories, including an autobiography
  • Has lived in the Seattle area for 35 years with husband, Dr. Andew Tadie, who teaches English at Seattle University
  • Has two daughters, five grandchildren and in June of 2014 will cerlebrate 41st wedding anniversary with Andrew
